The palace linen guide: hotel standards at home

Le linge de palace, Maison Marlaie

If you have ever slept in a palace, you know that something, in the night, feels different without your being able to explain it. It is not (only) the bed. It is the linen.

This guide brings together the main hotel standards, rarely written down, almost always passed on through experience, each with a version you can apply at home.

The choice of textile

  • Sheets and pillowcases: 100 % cotton percale, a weave of 200 to 300 threads per cm². For the most luxurious palaces: Egyptian cotton percale, up to 400 threads.
  • Bath towels: 100 % cotton towelling, a weight of 550 to 650 g/m².
  • Robes: cotton towelling or waffle, 400 to 500 g/m².

For the home: aim for a percale of at least 200 threads, and towels of 550 g/m².

The frequencies

  • Sheets: changed daily in a palace, once a week at home.
  • Towels: changed daily in a palace, at least once a week at home.
  • Robes: between each guest in a palace, once every 10-15 days at home.

The three obsessions of the hotel laundry

  1. Absolute whiteness (for white linen).
  2. The hand of the fabric (softness, no stiffness).
  3. A lasting olfactive signature.

These three aims can be reached at home with: a liquid detergent dedicated to white (PURE), a signature fragranced softener (MÉMOIRE), and regularity of care.

The standard washing gestures

  1. Strict sorting by type of linen.
  2. Pre-soaking for marked linen (1 h in cold water).
  3. A 40 °C cycle as standard.
  4. Liquid detergent (powder + percarbonate for extreme cases).
  5. Thorough rinsing (an extra rinse cycle).
  6. Fragranced softener, 25 ml.
  7. Drying in warm air or hanging in the shade.
  8. Press ironing on slightly damp linen.

Ironing, a step often sacrificed

What visually sets a palace sheet apart from a well-cared-for home sheet: ironing. A simple steam-iron pass, on still slightly damp linen, is enough.

Storage and rotation

Linen is never stored warm, never compressed, never in piles of more than 10. Strict FIFO rotation (first in, first out). At home: airy shelves, moderate piles, a scented sachet every 10-15 cm.

The 10 standards to remember

  1. Percale of at least 200 threads, towels of 550 g/m².
  2. Strict sorting by type of linen.
  3. Pre-soaking for very soiled linen.
  4. A liquid detergent dedicated to white, plus a signature softener.
  5. An extra rinse.
  6. Gentle drying, in the shade.
  7. Ironing on damp linen.
  8. Moderate, airy piles, FIFO rotation.
  9. A coherent olfactive signature across linen, sachets and wardrobe.
  10. Regular renewal.
