Fabric softener is one of the most debated household products. A poor softener is indeed a needless pollutant. A good softener, well dosed, is one of the most distinctive gestures for your linen.
What a fabric softener really does
It has two main functions:
- To relax the fibre: a very fine film smooths the fibre and makes it more supple. A towel washed with softener is plusher, softer to the touch.
- To lay down a trail of scent: the detergent is rinsed away, the softener is not. It is what leaves a lasting olfactive signature (3-4 days on a sheet).
In palaces, it is the main carrier of the establishment's olfactive signature.
Do you really need a fabric softener?
- Household linen (sheets, towels, pillowcases): yes, clearly.
- Clothing: yes, except technical fabrics.
- Delicate linen (silk, wool): at a reduced dose.
- Baby linen: a hypoallergenic softener at a reduced dose.
- Tea towels/cloths: unnecessary.
The 3 criteria of a good premium softener
- The fragrance composition: crafted by a nose, with top, heart and base notes, not a generic “fresh linen” smell.
- The hold: at least 3-4 days on the fibre, without a fresh wash.
- The hand of the linen: supple without greasing or weighing it down.
How to use a fabric softener well
Dose: 25 ml per standard machine. A third of a cap. No more.
Where to pour it: into the softener compartment of the drawer (marked with a flower). Never directly into the drum.
Delicate linen: halve the dose.
The received ideas
“Fabric softener leaves residue in the machine”: with modern formulations and a correct dose, build-up stays minimal. A monthly empty hot cycle keeps the drawer and drum clean.
“Fabric softener clogs the fibres”: true in cases of chronic overdosing. At 25 ml per machine, the film is microscopic.
“Towels stop absorbing”: true for low-grade, overdosed softeners. With a good softener at the right dose, the impact on absorbency is minimal.
