When we present Maison Marlaie, a French house headquartered in Antibes, built around a culture of linen inherited from French laundering, we are often asked the same question: “Why do you manufacture in Italy, and not in France?” The answer deserves more than a sentence.
Italy, Europe's leading hub for premium detergent
The Italian chemical industry, contrary to what one imagines in France, is one of the country's most advanced sectors. It supplies a significant share of the detergents, softeners and household products sold in Europe.
Beyond volume, Italy holds a historic expertise in textile care, explained by the central place textile has held in Italian industry since the Middle Ages. Prato, Como, Biella and Milan are the world's textile hubs for wool, silk and woven cotton. Where there is textile, there is washing expertise.
A fabric of specialised small firms
Unlike the French chemical industry, heavily concentrated in a few large groups, Italy has kept a fabric of specialised small firms that produce in small batches with a rare demand for quality. Some work for luxury cosmetics, for high-end hospitality, for perfume houses.
Our Italian partner is one of them. It formulates for several recognised houses in the linen and perfume sector, and it has been with us since the development of our three formulas.
A demand for perfumery
The other decisive asset: its proximity to the great houses of fragrance composition. Several Italian composers have supplied the greatest perfume brands for decades. This culture of the nose, of the trail of scent, of a fragrance's hold over time, is found again in Italian household products.
A French house that produces in Italy
This choice is not isolated. A large part of French luxury leather goods is assembled in Italy. So is a large part of luxury footwear. Some fragrances of great French perfumers are composed in Italy.
Maison Marlaie is a French house: headquarters, formulation, artistic direction, distribution. Manufacturing takes place at a selected Italian partner. We embrace it fully: conceived in France, made in Italy.
What this changes for you
- A finer formulation: surfactants, acidity, viscosity calibrated with precision.
- A lasting yet unobtrusive scent: a fragrance composition crafted by a nose.
- Consistency of quality: short, controlled batches.
- Full traceability: each bottle traceable to its batch.
